                March 2021 Newsletter

Greetings Everyone!

Just a quick note to let you know  a few things that are happening here at Shenandoah Restoration and around the web.

We now have a new web site for Trunks Parts, www.TreasuredTrunks.com is dedicated to trunks restoration only and can find
or help you with any or your trunk restoration needs.

For everyone that has ever restored an antique steamer trunk you probably had 50 questions about how to do certain things
during the project.   I have added to the site  a Hints and Procedures page to offer help to all  of you Do - It -Your-selfers.
Read it over and let me know what you  think.

www.shenandoahrestoration.com/Hints.html

OK, that is all of the good news..... now  for the bad news...

Effective on March 31, 2021 our hardware will be only available through the catalog. Please call our parts # 580-458-0700 9
to 5 M-F to order a catalog or anything in it. Some prices will increase,  and actually some will decrease. ( I suppose that part
should be in the Good News area, but anyway.....)  Also  the shipping costs will be  adjusted a bit

F.Y.I. - - -This is for anyone who searches the web via Google's search engine.......

Google has drastically changed the way that they rank and index website pages  and have instigated an Over Optimization
Penalty that penalizes websites that try to  trick Google  in various ways to get their site on the first or second page of a
search listing.  This has resulted in many sites being sent to  the bottom of the heap on searches. Many of these sites
consistently ranked in the top 1-2 pages of previous searches.

This might explain  why your favorite website isn't at the first or second page of Google searches any longer.

'til next time,

Greetings Everyone!

Just a quick note to let you know  a few things that are happening here at Shenandoah Restoration and around the web.

We have sold all  except 3 trunks in the storage barn  for restoration.  Two flat tops and one dome top are on their way in.     I
should have pictures of  all six  in  the stock page by the last of March.
www.shenandoahrestoration.com/stock.html

Sales of hardware seem to be up since  the hard winter is over and many people are looking to do refinishing work and
restoration work to their heirlooms in  the spring.  Despite the increase in prices in March, hardware here at Shenandoah
Restoration  still  remains a bargain. We stock trunk, oil lamp, Hoosier cabinet, and antique wall telephone hardware along
with  refinishing supplies.

Greetings!!

Lots of things are happening here at Shenandoah Restoration and we hope you  will be able to benefit from some  or all of
them

We  still have a stock of trunks in the Storage barn and all are available for sale or restoration. Take a look at  them at  the
stock page of  the site.

www.shenandoahrestoration.com/stock.html

We are getting calls and emails each day  asking for a catalog of hardware items we sell. As of yet we do not have one. We
are now building a catalog to download  from the site and print on your own computer.   As  soon as it is ready we will be
offering  it for a small price as a downloadable file and it will contain all items, prices,  dimensions, hints, shipping, etc.

New Items for sale
Also in the very near  future we are adding items to our line up of  hardware.

Victorian toile cloth for lining of trunks, with  victorian scenes
Victorian prints for replacing  artwork in trunk lids
Various wallpapers for re-lining
A smaller leather lid lifter for trunk lids
Kits for steamer trunk restoration, at a reduced price compared to buying separate parts
A spring hasp lock plate

Cloth Relining

When relining a trunk in cloth material always use thin poster board backer board to attach the material to before attaching
to the trunk.

Cut the poster board to size for each surface and use 3M spray adhesive to glue  the cloth to the board. Spray both
surfaces with  glue  to attach the poster board/cloth panel to the trunk.

Using this method will mean  no use of staples to attach cloth lining and the material will always stay flat and tight with no
wrinkles.

Matching handles to caps and loops

When buying new leather handles for your trunk and replacing the handle loops and caps, be sure the cap/loop opening
dimension is large  enough to accept the handle width.  Double check the dimensions of the handle and opening of the loop
or cap. Handles have to fit inside or under the loop/cap.

New Service for rusted / painted  reusable parts

Here at Shenandoah Restoration we use an electrolysis bath  process to remove rust and paint from hardware ( clamps,
locks, corners, rollers, etc.) that is very thorough yet gentle to the metal. Nickel plating remains and all rust , paint, dirt, etc  is
removed. The parts are then buffed and clearcoated  to prevent corrosion.  The result is an almost new  appearance with a
slight distressed look, perfect for a restored trunk.

We are able to offer this service to anyone who wants to send us their hardware for cleaning and buffing. Pricing is based on
the number of items and condition of the items. ( Usually about $40.00 for approx 25 parts.)

Join our discussion board at the website for sharing of ideas on Trunk, Victrola, and Furniture restoration!!

So long until next time!

Painting embossed tin in gold leaf and metallic colors
We recent restored a trunk  that had embossed tin that was nickel plated in the recessed areas and thinly gold lacquered
on the raised areas.  A lot of the nickel had suffered rust  damage and could not be redone the original way. We decided to
"reverse" the coloring. Gold leaf paint was applied over the entire embossed pattern,  then the paint was sanded off of the
raised areas with a "Mouse" sander to reveal the metal color beneath. Last the gold color was antiqued with  Watco Danish
oil stain and wiped down to soften the over all look. A clear coat was applied to  stop any rust  down the road of the sanded
areas.  Look for a picture of this trunk in  the Before/After page soon.

                                                                                                                        December 2005

Greetings,
Well another year has rolled past us and we have made lots of changes and additions here at Shenandoah Restoration.

Almost all of the trunks in the Stock room are sold and we have to restock with trunks to maintain our offering, look for
new stock to come soon in 2006.

New items for sale
We have added several new items to our hardware department:
·        Victorian artwork and tapes for inside the lid
·        Casted brass trunk corners,
·        Hand forged iron locks, hasps, hinges, brass nails and forged nails
·        Doll trunk handles
·        New full size leather trunk handles in several new colors (chestnut, burgundy)
·        Casted brass drawbolt
·        Antique trunk identification guide book
All are now available on the site at www.shenandoahrestoration.com

New Location
In Fall of 2005 we again moved the business and split the trunk restoration and hardware/phonograph operations
between 2 locations.
Our new address appears on the website.

Phonograph restoration / rebuild
Although we have always offered Victrola phonograph restoration and motor / governor service, in 2005 we stepped up
the amount of work and added 3 pages to the website to market the complete restoration and rebuild of phonographs,
mechanical service, parts, needles, etc.

Check out www.shenandoahrestoration.com/phono.html to see what we have to offer in Phonograph restoration.

Pricing
Although we try to hold our prices for restoration work and hardware low as possible, we had to raise prices for trunk
and phonograph restoration in 2005 and hardware prices are likely to rise in Spring 2006 as our suppliers raise prices
for a new year. Get your orders in early!

Have a great New Year and Happy Holidays!
